Demons into A Grade finals
In the final round of the home and away season White Hills took on Kangaroo Flat at Dower Park. The equation was simple for the Demons, win and they finish 2nd or 3rd, lose and they finish 4th or lose outright and miss finals completely. Mitch won the toss and elected to bat and it wasn’t the Demons best day with the bat as we were bowled out for 111 in the 50th over. Opener Sam Stagg top scored with 35 off 85 balls while coach Rhys Irwin was the next best with 17 off 67. That left 32 overs remaining in the day and the Demons were going to need to take early wickets. Irwin got an early breakthrough to have them 1/9 before the Roos were doing it easy at 1/35. However a terrific spell from Travis Colley and along with skipper Mitch Winter-Irving took 4/9 between them to have the Roos 5/44. K/Flat got through the rest of the day and finished at 5/83. The start of Day 2 saw Kangaroo Flat needing 29 runs to win with 5 wickets in hand. Colley picked up his 4th when he trapped Adam Burns lbw 3rd ball of the day and Demons were up and about. A massive caught behind appeal was denied off Winter-Irving which would have had the Roos 7/87. Irwin came into the attack and picked up 2 quick wickets to have the Roos 8/104 still needing 8 runs to win. Once again a huge caught behind appeal was denied off Colley which would’ve had the score 9/104. The Roos then passed our score for a first innings win before Irwin picked up his 4th scalp. Kangaroo Flat declared at 9/130 with a lead of 19 with 64 overs remaining in the day. Irwin took 4/34 while Colley claimed 4/48. White Hills lost opener Ryan Grundy on the 3rd ball before Stagg and Gavin Bowles batted patiently for the next 15 overs. But the introduction of spin for K/Flat changed things and Stagg was gone for 13 before Bowles was caught at mid off for 27 leaving White Hills 3/45. Irwin and Winter-Irving got the side through to tea and put on 41 for the 4th wicket before Irwin was out caught for 16. Wickets then tumbled quickly including Winter-Irving for 27. We were bowled out in the 51st over for 113 which left the Roos needing 94 off 10 overs to win outright and deny us finals. White Hills took early wickets and the task was too much for the Roos as they made 5/62. Irwin picked up 3/26 while there was 2 run outs. A grade finished 4th and will head back to Bell Oval to take on Strathdale Maristians this weekend.
