Dissapointing Demons fall short in season opener
White Hills has lost its season opener against Kangaroo Flat at Glen Loddon Homes oval snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Having won the toss and electing to bowl, the Roos made a solid start being 0/28 after 8 overs before the rain came. With play off for around 25 minutes, the game was reduced to 42 overs each. Myles Wade picked up the first wicket when he had Daniel Barber sky one which was well caught by Gavin Bowles. Bowles then came on and removed Jake Klemm and the Roos were in a good spot at 2/102. However when coach Rhys Irwin removed Nathan Stubbings for 41, it sparked a fightback from the Demons. Bowles then picked up 2 more wickets to finish with 3/29 while skipper Mitch Winter-Irving grabbed 2 wickets to see the Roos fall to 7/138. Some late order hitting saw the Roos finish with 8/166.
White Hills changed the batting order with regular opener Sam Stagg put down to number 3 to allow Gavin Bowles to open and spend as much time in the middle before heading off to a wedding. The opening pair of Bowles and Ryan Grundy seemed in a hurry and bought up the 100 run stand in no time. Bowles continued his outstanding form from last year reaching a half century. With just 60 runs required and 10 wickets in hand, it seemed the Demons would storm to victory. However Grundy was bowled for 36 on the stroke of drinks and Bowles departed for 68 in the following over. With Ollie Geary and Winter-Irving both getting bowled the Demons had lost 4/11 and were 4/117. Sam Stagg and David Blume seemed to get the side back on track taking the score to 142 before Blume was bowled. Coach Irwin fell in the same over and then Stagg was dismissed the following over for 23 and the Demons had lost 3/0. The lower order did their best but ultimately came up 11 runs short as we were bowled out for 155 and had lost 10/49.
In the B grade action (A res), White Hills had a dominant win over Kangaroo Flat at Dower Park. Also winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Demons applied the screws from ball one and never allowed the Roos to get going. Nick Wharton took 2/16 off 9 overs, Tom Schultz 2/17 from 9, Adrian Holland 1/20 from 7, Paul McKenzie 1/25 while Englishman Rodgers was tidy with 0/10 off 7 and Linc Jacobs an economical 0/12 from 9.
To the run chase and it seemed like skipper Linc Jacobs had one thing in mind, to get the runs as quick as possible. Jacobs and opener Tallis Miles put on 74 for the opening wicket with Jacobs doing the majority of the work. The skipper bought up his 50 in just the 12th over as he blasted 56 from 44 balls including 6 fours and 3 sixes. Pat Egan also batted well making 21 not out while Miles was dismissed for 13. The Demons passing the total 2 wickets down in the 27th over.
